Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
