Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
