The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
