2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full message from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After some time of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.

His management and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular series in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of the game in the months to come.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Face the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every round. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but fans can anticipate further news as development advances.
